India

Mehrangarh Courtyard in Mehrangarh Fort overlooking Jodhpur, a well preserved example of classic Rajput architecture in western Rajasthan.
Nathmal Haveli (mansion), Jaisalmer. The building has been in the same family for at least seven generations and is still used as a family residence. According to the owner the commission for the building was given to two architect brothers; each one designed half the building following a common structure but with individual details on each side. The haveli follows the Rajput style of inventive variation in detail within a structure of overall symmetry.
View of the fort overlooking Jaisalmer, Rajasthan's "golden city." Jaisalmer fort is one of the few living forts remaining in India and is home to over 1000 residents.
The Taj Mahal in Agra, India, on a cool and overcast January day. Tripods are not allowed into the Taj Mahal complex so these photos were taken with a hand held camera and stitched together as well as possible later on.
WindsPalace Hawa Mahal, or Winds Palace in Jaipur. Part of the royal complex, the facade was built to allow women of the court to take in the surrounding market from the privacy of the many balconies. The interior of the Hawa Mahal was undergoing restoration when these photos were taken. The Sadhu in the photo just came out of nowhere; I turned the camera and there he was.
JaipChandpol Traffic roundabout on Chandpol Street in Jaipur. Normally this is a busy, chaotic and somewhat dangerous intersection, with an unruly assortment of cars, trucks, rickshaws, bicycles, scooters, horse and camel carts and pedestrians competing for space. These photos were taken on the day before the general Rajasthan election, a business holiday throughout the state, so traffic was relatively light.
UdaipurLake An early morning view of beautiful Lake Pichola in Udaipur, Rajasthan, with the floating palace in the background. The lake is primarily man-made, with the fill making up the foundation of the City Palace, seen to the left of the island, also man-made. The lake and palace feature prominently in the James Bond movie "Octopussy," which is certainly showing somewhere this evening in Udaipur. Taken from the rooftop terrace of the Jagat Niwas Palace hotel, a converted mansion, highly recommended.

Italy

riomaggiore Riomaggiore, the southernmost town in the Cinque Terre region of Liguria. The formerly remote towns on Italy's west coast now make up a UNESCO world heritage site.
vernazza Vernazza, another town in Cinque Terre.
  vernazza Manarola, Cinque Terre.
camogli Camogli, a port town farther north in Liguria, known for its "painted ladies," buildings painted with trompe d'oeil details.

Oman

AUSatrium The old town of Al Hambra in central Oman made from stone, straw and mud. Most rural Omanis have moved to modern concrete homes nearby, leaving the old buidings behind.

United Arab Emirates

AUSatrium Farmer's hut in a date plantation in the Al Ain oasis.
AUSatrium A view of the main atrium in the administration building at my university, American University of Sharjah, in the United Arab Emirates. The Ottoman and Moghul architectural cues are repeated throughout the campus.

Singapore

BaghdadSt Baghdad Street is located in the commercial area of Geylang in Singapore, traditionally a Muslim majority part of the city. The grand mosque is just visible in the distance, up the side street.
NYPatrium The main entranceway of Nanyang Polytechnic, where I taught in the School of Digital Media Design from 2001-2003. This is one of the rare times when the space was not buzzing with activity.
JooChiatSt Joo Chiat Street in Geylang is part an older residential area with good examples of local Peranakan architecture, a mix of Chinese, Malay, and colonial features. In Singapore's headlong rush to modernization many such streets have been razed to make way for generic high-rise architecture. Recently there has been renewed interest in conserving the surviving examples of traditional architecture. Young professionals are moving into this section of Joo Chiat Street and other areas like it.
PierceReserv It has been said that if you put a stick in the ground in Singapore it will grow. This is a view of a nature walk leading to Singapore's main reservoir, located just about in the center of the island. In spite of the generous rainfall, the island needs to import the bulk of its water from neighboring Malaysia.

Hong Kong
